What Determines the Value of our Heirloom Blankets

What Determines the Value of our Heirloom Blankets

It’s no secret - our blankets are on the higher-end price point, when it comes to blankets.

Our customers can absolutely feel the high-quality when receiving one of our heirloom blankets for the first time.  They have a luxury feel to them, they’re elegant, and the large size drapes beautifully - for the ultimate coziness.

Let’s dive into where the cost comes from and how it’s determined.  The higher price-point comes down to 3 important factors; fibre, process, and crafting.

Let’s look at fibre first.  Icelandic wool is unique from any other wool type.  The Icelandic sheep have an additional layer to their wool to protect them from the extreme weather in Iceland.  This makes the wool lightweight, water-resistant, and incredibly warm.  This sacred wool is truly incomparable to any other wool or fibre.

Another interesting aspect of wool, is its high-frequency of 5000hz - [read more on that here] that helps to ground and calm us naturally.

Process.  It is important to note, Iceland has some of the strictest standards for animal welfare, ensuring that wool is collected respectfully- in many cases by the farmer themselves.  The sheep roam free in the Icelandic wilderness throughout the summer and are brought indoors for sheering - which is a natural process that is necessary for them.

The result is wool that is humanely collected.  The where and how of fibres is very important - ensuring respect for the animal and the planet.  Once wool is collected, it’s processed into yarn using geothermal energy, and very little detergents and dyes in the process.  These more gentle practices place emphasis on ethics and result in higher costs.

Crafting.  At KH, we value old-practices and artisan crafted pieces - less mass-production, more labour of love.  The love and energy that is put into creating something, is also important, which is why our blankets are produced in Iceland, in limited production.

Producing in Iceland ensures the authenticity of our blankets, but also the high-standards that come from this beautiful country, expert care and high-quality.  The cost of this type of production is of course higher than more conventional production.

These factors - The highest-quality, unique fibre, gently and respectfully processed, then consciously crafted with care in limited production in Iceland, are what create our quality heirloom blankets, and the value.

Additionally, there are a few qualities of our blankets that make them very unique to other blankets on the market.  They are made from Pure Icelandic Lambswool which is a rare fibre that only a few mills in Iceland produce. It is softer than traditional Icelandic wool, and embodies the same characteristics and benefits. Though most wool blankets are a flat-weave style of construction, our blankets are constructed from a knit weave, and are double layered - providing two looks in one blanket with positive/negative colour and pattern on reverse sides.  Though they are remarkably lightweight, this double layer and generous size provides a very cozy draping effect.

These are more than just blankets.  They are investment pieces that calm, comfort, and elevate.
